Increases of 4 002 170, 4 067 172 for line 65, 66 and a decline of 65 002 67 respectively due to a 7% increase in the number of life insurance policies. The movement is driven by the uptick in the life insurance space but was offset by the non-life insurance movement which decreased year-on-year. Reason for this increase could be the negative macro-economic environment in the country in 2024. 12. Line 88 a. Number of loan accounts (for commercial banks) was affected by implementation of IFRS 9, which also introduced a new write off policy in line with the reporting standard. Prior to the implementation of IFRS 9 in 2018 loans were written off earlier (when more than 90 days in arrears or with a legal status). Line 111 related to Outstanding Deposits: The total outstanding balance of deposits for commercial banks increased by R315 715 million in 2024, while that of households’ deposits increased by R127 710 million. This partly reflected increased diverse product offering by banks to customers to attract deposits in the higher interest rate environment in South Africa during 2024 and increase in number of customers widespread across banks. 16. The increase in line 116 of 170, was due to an increase in total savings deposits, driven by the increase in membership deposits. 17. Line 123 increased by 862 from 2023 to 2024 due to more business from other deposit takers. 18. Outstanding deposits of insurance corporations a. Line 127 increased since 2023 to 2024 due to improved coverage of non-life insurers related to a 12% increase year-on-year driven by the movement in the Life insurance and annuities entitlements line 126. Line 135 increased by 56 in 2024 due to increases in long term loans “housing finance” that was also supported by increase in membership of one large Co-operative bank. d. Line 142 decrease in other deposit takers of 1 926 was due to the deliberate action of a development institution to reduce its book to focus only on development finance going forward. This is to be attained by end of the 2025 financial year. e. Line 144 to 145 both increased by 386 and 3224 respectively due to long-term loans extended by retail financial services.
